Why an EV can be a perfect school-run companion

019 Aug 2024

5 ways an EV can boost busy drop-offs and put the fun into the school run

If you’re contemplating switching to an EV or are about to start a new school term with your first electric car, you’ll be pleased to know that EVs can be a perfect companion for busy family life – including school trips. Here's how:

1. You can have more space for school kit

School stuff can take up a lot of space. From the PE bag to the book bag, music and sports equipment, lunch box and school rucksack... not to mention all the precious artwork they come running out of the school gates with. The good news is, depending on their make and model, EVs can often have larger storage capacity in their boots than their petrol equivalents. This is because there’s no engine or gearbox that needs to be accommodated, so boots can be roomier and more spacious. This could be very handy with a large family and lots of school hobbies.

2. You can enjoy family singalongs and chats

EVs are quieter than petrol cars because they don’t have a combustion engine. If you’re an EV newcomer, you could be pleasantly surprised by the peace and quiet to be found within an EV, which means that favourite drive-time radio shows, fun family karaoke sessions, or even just a favourite audio book can be enjoyed on the way to and from school.

3. You can grab a coffee while charging

If you love multitasking and want to pack a bit more productivity after dropping off your loved ones, why not turn an EV charging session into a half-price coffee break? We’re offering 50% off all Wild Bean Cafe hot drinks when charging your vehicle at a bp pulse charger at any participating bp owned and operated petrol station*.

*One drink per charge per visit. Here are the full terms and conditions for the offer.

4. You can keep the family topped up

Your EV can act as an essential portable power source, ready to power up school laptops, tablets, and gaming consoles while you’re waiting for pick-up. This can be really handy if you’ve got, for example, one child in a swimming lesson and one child waiting on the sidelines with you. They can play their favourite game while you catch up with emails – or book a family break – with no running out of charge.

5. You can whizz around the shops while your EV charges

School life is famous for last-minute requests – from food ingredients for a bake off, to World Book Day costumes. Let’s imagine your children spring all this on you on your way home – and you want to top up your EV, too. Luckily, with bp pulse chargers near shopping centres, retail sites and high street locations, you can grab what you need and come back to a charged EV.

We hope this quick and easy list has come in handy for switching into term-time planning mode. For more helpful EV charging, why not download our free app and search for us on your next journey. Have a great return to school.
