1. The charging infrastructure nearly doubled in 2023

Last year, the EV charging infrastructure across the UK expanded by 43% YoY (year-over-year) according to the government*. With the UK government backing the EV era with £2 billion of investment, and bp pledging up to £1 billion** over a decade, this is one space to watch.

2. The UK now has 55,301 public charging points across EV charging networks

At the end of Jan 2024, there were 55,301 charging points across the UK in 31,445 charging locations***. This figure includes the combined total of public EV charging points across different EV charging suppliers, including those in workplaces, depots, and commercial sites.

3. EV registration just passed the one millionth milestone

The start of 2024 saw the registration of the millionth BEV**** (Battery Electric Vehicle) - meaning there's now an estimated 1 million EVs using UK roads. In fact, with 142,876 more EV cars registered in January, the UK is now home to over a million***** EVs. That’s quite an adoption.

4. Second-hand EV ownership soared by 90%

In 2023, sales of used EVs were up by 90% in the UK****** compared to 2022. With nearly 120,000 EVs changing hands*******, this indicates a strong demand for EVs in the used car market, and could suggest the second-hand EV market will have more variety and choice in the future.

5. EV owners may be able to save up to £700 a year on maintenance costs

According to recent research, the top selling petrol cars of the UK could cost £700******** more to run annually than their EV equivalents. The same research says that top performing EVs of 2023 could cost up to £1,300 less than their equivalent petrol cars.
